Dressing proper in some workplaces is a mandatory activity to do because it affects the company culture and values. Companies with a uniform for work expect all employees and employers to oblige to the mentioned dress code. Generally speaking, the workplace is a place of implementation and not an invitation to dress like you are going to a club hence men need to dress sharp even during work occasions such as celebrations, promotions and informal events.
This blog post will outline two (2) reasons why it is key for men to dress proper for work occasions, so read on closely gentlemen.
1. Dressing proper is a sign that you respect your work station and yourself
Indeed Charles Hix was right when he said “Looking good isn’t self importance it is self respect” because his words when put into practice lead to tremendous expectations such as people like strangers greeting you and treating you with respect. Rocking a well fitted suit every time you head to work is one way to dress like a respectful mam and even your bosses and supervisors will respect you because you look like a man ready to get work done.
If the company has a dress code, I urge men to follow it and dress in a way that shows unity and understanding of the company’s values and mission as well as respect for the company.
Before COVID-19 evaded the world in 2020, I once worked for a prestigious hotel, a five star actually and I was thrilled to work there just straight from University doing my internship , I loved the fact that the Company explicitly told me that there is a dress code for Interns , I was told to wear a white dress shirt, black formal pants and proper shoes. Ties were not really a requirement but knowing myself and my love for formal wear, I stripped on my necktie. I loved dressing that way and I did it to respect myself and my beloved work stations which was the hotel.
Therefore, I suggest men dress sharp and if the company doesn’t have the dress code, well still dress the part even if you work in a casual environment because potential clients can come to your work station and they need to see the employees looking proper or sharp to develop a sense of trust in their services.
2. Dressing sharp ensures that you appear credible giving way for employers to promote you
In the past, I once wrote a blog titled “FASHIONABLE OUTFITS THAT ARE UNSUITABLE FOR MEN IN THE WORKPLACE” , that blog explained why unnecessary jewellery was to be avoided and not worn during working hours because it is a distraction. When you start to dress sharp, you omit unwanted items like gold chains , rings and tattoos which are not proper for work. To ensure you look credible, don’t dress like a thug. According to a blog I published in May 2023, titled “6 THINGS MEN WILL EXPERIENCE WHEN DRESSING EXQUISITE”, a point about dressing proper or sharp leading to people believing your word was raised. This point stresses the need for men to dress sharp because it paints a picture and personality that can affect your work. Employers, clients and the people you engage with will believe in you as the employee if you present yourself in a professional manner by treating others with respect and most key dressing the part for every work occasion. This can be achieved by being consistent with proper garments and that can lead to an employer increasing your pay and even promoting you because you set a good example within the company.

I agree with you the men should dress well at work. My son got a holiday job at the airport and I sent his clothes to dry cleaner to press because I wanted him to look sharp when he goes to work. Great informative post. Are you a fashion designer?

I very much agree with you. I think in a lot of ways, how you dress is how you’re perceived and we have to be careful with how we look at work for that reason.
